We have your images!

I recently had a client who told me he wanted all of his images “protected” from being downloaded. My answer was simple: “It’s not worth your time to persue that goal”. If someone who knows what he or she is doing wants an image, they’re going to get it by either examining your code, checking their cache or utilizing their print screen button.

Instead of wasting time with trying to block images, copyright them! Get yourself a watermark and place it on all of your pictures. There’s even a nifty little website that does it for you! Okay, this doesn’t work for every site, especially ones with a lot of images. For those I use something like this.

In other news I’m eagerly awaiting the next Futurama movie. The first movie could have been better, so I’m hoping this movie makes up for it.

Yeah I would have to agree it’s really not worth the time. I hate when I’m working on someones website and they make requests like that. They just take up your time doing nonsense.

It IS nonsense. They don’t understand that disabling right-clicking is just a javascript control (for example). Then you have to explain to them what javascript is, how it can be switched on and off in the browser etc – some clients are a royal PIA – usually the ones who have a LITTLE knowledge (which we all know is very dangerous). These are the ones who read a headline somewhere on someone’s blog about such-and-such, and call you in the middle of the night saying there’s been a change of plan. It’s like knowing 2% of law and then dictating to your lawyer what he should do next. You pay a professional, you have to listen to them and trust them.

I’ve also seen sites that use very strong watermarks to the point you pretty much just see their logo / domain name on each photo with something obscured in the background (the actual product they’re trying to sell!).
