Most of these points are clear examples of why project management is so important, even for those small sites that seem to be cut-and-dried. After freelancing full-time for 10 years now, I’ve found that a clear understanding of scope, time and cost by all parties is essential. However, it is just as important to know what your strengths and weaknesses are so that you can underpromise and overdeliver.

Thank you for sharing your ideas on this topic. It brings back plenty of memories for me.

Great tips for a freelancer like me. We all make mistakes I guess. The most important thing is admitting that you made mistakes and learning from it. And of course, moving on from there onwards. A nice piece of writing!

The client needs to know your boundaries of what is acceptable. No boundaries and you will get feature creep and endless favours asked (it seems to always happen!). It’s a mistake for developers to think : “Well I wouldn’t do that, why should they be cheeky and ask for more work to be done for no extra cost?”. A needless question. Simply set your rules and boundaries right from the outset. And you don’t have to be blunt about it too – you can write your rules down in plain English as your terms and conditions. KEEP IT SIMPLE. Don’t talk in legalise. But make sure you get your clients to agree to these terms from the outset.
